about

«Hearing means to interprete things in new ways...»

ABOUT THE ARTIST:

Dominik Grenzler is a musician and sound artist with a spot for experimental and ambient soundscapes. Born in 1977 in Gdynia. Raised on a soundtrack of bubbly 80’s synth pop and early 90’s guitar music. Playing e-bass in several bands in Germany’s former coal-mining hub, the Ruhr district, from 1993 to 1995, he gained experiences in a wide variety of musical genres. This is followed by numerous performances with supporting acts for Whitney Houston, Joe Cocker, Marla Glen with Daniel Denecke amongst others from 1998 through to 2001. After a three-year creative break and thanks to his old friend Benjamin Maciej Pawlowski aka Bnibs he finds his way back to music.

Inspired by many experiences during travels, encounters and further training Dominik started to explore sound in different ways. In 2008 he began with the initial recording sessions for AN MOKU – The sound landscape is formed by synthesizer sounds, acoustic instruments, home-made noise makers and diverse field recordings. The accentuation is provided by tweaks, clicking loops and drones. The result is a lush visceral collage. The literal translation of the Japanese word «Anmoku» is “tacit, unsaid, implicit” conveying that an idea or thought cannot be put into words but is subconsciously understood. Inspired and animated, with this approach, Dominik gives the listener a lot of room for imagination and interpretation.

Privately, Dominik Grenzler is living and working in his adopted hometown of Zurich.

ABOUT THE TRACK:

The opener of «How to catch STILLE?» is inspired by John Cage. Months ago i have listened to Boris Berman's release: «Cage - Music for prepared piano». One piece of that music did not came out of my mind - «Root of an Unfocus». I took over the idea of that and interpreted it by using own sound sources.
The beginnig is a sound of blowing through a clarinet. I have recorded it with Katharina Schreib during a session for an other project. The sound construct you hear after that intro is a mix of two cello sounds (over layer) taken from earlier sessions. They are pitched down a little bit to appear heavy. The sound of a kind of slide with untypical side effects is a cello sound as well. A short click sound of a cello string provides the basis of a metronome at 104 bpm. The same one comes transformed in the middle of the track additionally. A dissonant piano chord in the foreground and two transformed sounds of a neon lamp (captured in the basement) in the background at the beginning and the ending.
You can call that whole alteration «Prolog».
