Music
My passion for music was ignited at an early age. As soon as I was able, I started recording my favourite tracks off the Belgian radio and making mixtapes using an old-timey mixer I acquired for a small price. After discovering the music of The Future Sound of London and The Orb, I soon began to search for ways to record my own sounds and mixing them into selfmade tracks under the artistic alias Virlyn. Where first I was focused on learning how to make electronic breaks, I later became more interested in ambient sounds and experimental electronica.
With my first computer came a whole new array of possibilities and soon I started to experiment with basic music software. Still drawn very much to electronic music, I mainly focused on making techno-a-like and drum’n’bass tracks. Later my interest would shift to experimental beats with influences from Autechre, Aphex Twin and Arovane. For the past four years, I’ve been able to share my passion by working at the independent alternative radio station Radio Centraal in Antwerp, where I have my own show. Called Able to Label, it deals mainly with experimental rock music and electronic.
In my early twenties I went to university and got a bachelor’s degree in history and later on a master’s degree in film and visual culture. This did not only keep me interested in cinema but also sparked my interest in atmospheric music and sound design; a genre and direction of music making I am still exploring. Since then my music is evolving into an organic symbiosis of classical instruments and an electronic transformation of field recordings. I also got intrigued by the use and alteration of recorded vocals and spoken word.
I was able to apply this method of designing music to a theatrical adaptation of Herman Hesse’s Steppewolf, for which I wrote and produced the music. In the meantime, I also released new work via the Belgian electronic label Xtraplex Records (my Wolk EP) and the Canadian netlabel Spiritech Records (my Scratch Book EP). In addition, I’m collaborating with the Polish sound designer Dominique Grenzler (aka An Moku) on a project that will result in the release of our album Of Mirrors on tape via the American record label Alreadydeadtapes Records. Furthermore I’m hoping to release my solo album soon on the Polish electronic ETAlabel.
