Valentina Vuksic - Tripping through idle runtime

from How to catch STILLE? by AN MOKU & Various Artists

backstage exclusive

about

ABOUT THE ARTIST:

Valentina Vuksic picks up electromagnetic "smog" surrounding computers produced by running software. The runtime environment of an operating system - the host for those computer processes in action - is made audable. Patterns as well as irregularities, spheric or harsh sounds, reflect the power flow through the electronic parts. The manner in which the power runs is directed by the underlying hardware and software. The pickedup emissions might be called the "real" computer music.

ABOUT THE TRACK:

Recording of the electromagnetic emissions of a laptop in an idle state. The system has just booted up, there is no user to interfere. The mouse and the keyboard remain untouched. The rhythms result from background processes of the operating system, which do some maintenance work. They check for input and system health regularly. Four induction coil based pickups are moved around the laptop. It's a ride along the idle state. In the middle of the recording, the screen switches to standby mode.

Operating system: Puppy Linux
Computer: ThinkPad G40
